I live near this little lake called Lake Valentine and I love watching it change through the seasons. I was driving my kids off to somewhere one chilly late-fall morning when I saw the most glorious sunrise with the lake fog rising. It was so cool that I immediately stopped the car where I could and took some photos to paint later. That is usually how I have to paint, as I am a father to 4 young boys and it’s a busy life! I sometimes paint at some very strange times.

When thinking about this image I was so excited to try to capture the moment in paint. It was very easy as painting fog is a bit deceiving. You have to desaturate and lighten a lot of the background to look like there is fog between your eye and the landscape behind. Since I paint alla prima (fancy word for just painting wet into wet, or in other words I don’t wait for the paint to dry between sessions), I couldn’t just paint a light foggy color over a saturated background. I instead needed to experiment with what color the fog made the landscape in the background look and try to capture that. The sun was also so fun to paint. It was blindingly bright that morning! I hope you can feel like you are there, the glorious beaming sun and the beautiful haze of the fog rising above the lake.
