I love boats. I don’t quite know why–I didn’t grow up sailing, nor live near an ocean. I did grow up going to lakes though, but I’m unconvinced that’s why I love them so much. I think they just amuse me. They are beautiful floating structures. They allow you to be on the water. They just have a magic I don’t quite know how to put into words. Funnily enough I get seasick quick easily so I don’t venture out on anything smaller than a cruise ship (and even those give me a tough time). I also love red, especially the number “3” pool ball orange-red. I found these boats and had to paint them. I also painted them with the intention of honoring my mentors in my previous art venture. I used to be a potter and learned from Kirk Freeman in college, which sent me on my first adventure of making pots for a good many years. I then apprenticed under a kind master potter named Steven Rolf just out of college. He took me in and taught me a lot about the business of pottery. Finally, I learned from afar from a French potter named Jean-Nicolas Gerard and he greatly influenced my later pots. Once I switched to painting, I wanted to honor my previous mentors and so when I painted this, I used their names instead of the other names that were on the boats.
